As one of the European Culture Capitals 2010 Pécs, this UNESCO world heritage site is getting discovered by thousands of tourists. With a calendar jam packed with cultural events, everyone will find some amusement to his/her taste.
Did you know that Pécs gave the famous op-art painter Victor Vasarely to the world? And no wonder, the city has so much to inspire a painter, be it classic or modern style…
Apart from being a traditionally multi-racial city and with a university of more than 30,000 students the city has a “unique spirit” as one of the MEPs told us in an article we wrote on this year’s cultural capitals. In fact, having spent 26 years of my life in that fabulous part of the world, I can only support that statement.
Unique for its lively, mediterranean-like atmosphere with open air cafés and bars open from spring till autumn, unique for its excellent red wines coming from the region and food uniting spices and flavours of its many ethnicities.
Unique also for the Mecsek hills protecting the city and offering its inhabitants great walks and hikings in the forest, a wide selection of tasty mushrooms and exceptional fauna and flora.
Looking at it from Brussels, it is shifting more and more into the sphere of a highly desired dream to live in a city where the sun is shining almost every day, local wine is exquisite and the fruits and vegetables you can buy in the local market do not only look good, but do actually taste good as well.
Therefore I can only recommend it to you no too miss the several hundreds of events, festivals, exhibitions and concerts that are coming up all over the year. Still do not have plans for your summer holidays? Time to make up your mind…
