Bruxelles et moi

Another one of those occasional stories about “how I ended up here” – this time from Marko, our most recent arrival. We learn of hitherto unsuspected similarities between Brussels and Tangiers…

The second creation

Up to now, there was only one Creation. From now on there are two

Clearer labels, fewer calories?

The EP is looking to make food labels clearer so that hurried shoppers can judge better what to include in their shopping cart. The most important thing is that  the energy content, followed by fat, carbohydrate, sugar, salt, protein, fibre and transfat content should be clearly displayed on front-of-pack labels. Euro not bust

“Estonia gets a green light to join the euro. Other Baltic states will benefit too.” In the midst of lots of doom and gloom about the euro, there are different perspectives. Read the article by Economist and follow an interesting debate going on.

Strange figures in the streets of Ljubljana

Wondering why you haven’t heard from Manja lately? She’s doing other things now, in Ljubljana, among which organising this intriguing art happening outside (and inside) the Europe House in the Slovenian capital. Pretty cool. Check it out here

Selling Europe’s Lifestyle

Came across this video clip on the EU Shanghai Expo website. Nice film, very professional, and an interesting attempt at capturing an upbeat view of “Europeanness”, still a tricky concept, at least when seen from inside.  So this is us? What do people think?

Donating a life

Next time you request a new passport you might also be asked if you want to become an organ donor. This is one European idea to increase transplant donation. MEPs want to adopt common quality and safety standards to boost Member State cooperation and combat trafficking. Watch the EuroparlTV video.

I like to move it

Moving is the most stressful experience after death of someone close and divorce. Why on Earth are we doing it?

Building A Greener Europe

Our homes and offices must cut energy consumption by 20% says Europe. But as the crisis hits taxpayers’ pockets, will the politicians pay for the measures needed? Could tax incentives be the answer? See and learn more in video clip.

The Psychology Behind Social Media

Pécs, the cultural capital of Europe 2010 and more…

As one of the European Culture Capitals 2010 Pécs, this UNESCO world heritage site is getting discovered by thousands of tourists. With a calendar jam packed with cultural events, everyone will find some amusement to his/her taste. Did you know that Pécs gave the famous op-art painter Victor Vasarely to the world? And no wonder, [...]

Food Clone Wars

Nanotechnologies used in food products extend the shelf life, but could potentially be toxic in certain cases. But the sticking point in negotiations between Parliament and Commission on new foodstuffs has been over products derived from cloned animals. With stakeholders in the US, the Commission is proceeding cautiously, but may be at loggerheads with MEPs. [...]

How to solve problems (if you have them)

No need to do the course! Anete tells us here how to solve all our problems. And be creative into the bargain. It’s all about hats, apparently…

Open Day photos

May 8th was Open Day for the European Institutions. WebCom was there all day, showing people what we do, recruiting Facebook fans and, at one point conducting our first weekend Facebook chat with Belgian vice-president, Isabelle Durant (to whom our thanks). Anyway, there are some great pictures online of the day’s events, by the inevitable [...]

A “big f*#king deal” in Brussels

It’s not often that the really big beasts of US politics pitch up in the European Parliament, but when they do, it’s a big deal. One US President has addressed the Parliament. That was Ronald Reagan in 1985. A far more recent visitor was the current Secretary of State, former First Lady and once heir apparent to the Democratic presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton, who came to Parliament for a “town-hall” meeting with young Europeans. So there was the usual excitement this week when US Vice-President Joe Biden came to the European Parliament.

eCall: Time saved = lives saved

The idea of equipping cars with an automatic SOS system is catching on in Europe. In case of a crash, an eCall-equipped car automatically calls the nearest emergency centre. Even if no passenger is able to speak, e.g. due to injuries, a ‘Minimum Set of Data’ is sent, which includes the exact location of the [...]

Changing the channel

Reports of TV’s demise much exaggerated? Television is adapting better to technological change than any other media business. Thus this interesting  article by The Economist.
