Yes, we have experts working on it with external companies and yes, it seems money is an issue – in the sense that they must have a clear mid-term solution before investing in a solution or an another. We’re talking about a lot of simultaneous streamings in many languages at the same time. Now, as I hope it appears in my post, I am not directly involved in this issue – the technical Units are. I had to investigate a bit to understand why Mac users cannot access to the streaming so our readers know we are aware of it.

No need to lobby, by the way ;-) Everyone is clearly aware this cannot go on like this and different teams are working together to find the best way.

I’ll look into the plug-ins this weekend, as you’re right: it would be nice to be able subscribe to the comments.

Two comments:
1) Did you talk to external companies for help? I entered “live streaming” in Google and first ad is http://www.intermedia-solutions.eu which seems to offer WMV and Flash streaming. Maybe those guys could help you?

2) How much would the machines + cards for MPEG4 encoding cost you? Is this really a money question?

And also here a bonus one:
How much support do you need to convince management that this is a real issue? Should we start a EP-Mac-Livestreaming campaign to help you?

Tibo: under the VLC menu, you should have the “Open URL” or “Open network” function (it changes depending on the version of VLC). Maybe you can add a note for Mac users for the next hearings in five years’ time… or maybe HTML5 will have taken us out of the limbo by then ;)

Thanks for the tip. I tried the same on my MacBook but VLC never found out how to use the url.

I am a Mac user and I could happily see the hearings by copying the URL below the language selection and pasting it into VLC.

I got the original audio stream without translation and that worked fine as I spoke the Commissioner-designate’s language, so I could understand all the answers although obviously I did miss some questions :)

Firefox only supports Ogg/Theora natively …

I don’t know whether HTML5 supports offering multiple formats.

Hi Jens,

You’re right, I should be more specific. Of course, in order to work, the HTML 5′s solution needs the video stream to be encoded in MPEG4. Since the HTML5 is not yet supported by all browsers, we (aka the IT teams) consider it as a longuer term possible option.
