The dangers of targeted online advertising

Bálint Szlankó among the panelists at a debate on new media in the EP (15 Oct)

Congratulations to Bálint Szlankó, who today won the European Parliament’s Prize for Journalism in the internet category. (We will publish an interview with him on Parliament’s website on Friday, 16 October.)

I went to check one of Bálint’s blogs, this one on foreign affairs, which is really interesting – though unfortunately I cannot read the content in Hungarian. (The other EU-centred blog is here.) The blog talks a lot about Afghanistan, which is presumably why, if you scroll down to the end of the blog, you find the following advertisement, which caught my eye:

“Date beautiful Afghani women. Chat with & date Afghani girls now!”

This has to be one of the world’s most improbable marketing campaigns!

I refer of course NOT to Afghan women’s beauty, but to their availability for dating and chatting :-)

  1. ok, perhaps not so many of Balint’s readers are looking for an opportunity to date Afghani women.

But still, interestingly enough, the website which is promoted (muslims4marriage.com) has four Afghani female users with a profile, apparently actually living in Afghanistan. You can make contact with them if you pretend to be based in Afghanistan yourself and a man, and if you register as a user.

Not sure whether they are interested in the EU’s foreign and security policy but probably affected by it in one way or another!

  2. Nice post and well done to the worthy winners. In the panel discussion there was some debate over what constitutes the European media.

Who remembers “The European” newspaper started in the heady days of the collapse of Communism by a Czech-born British ‘businessmen’?

Re Afghan dating: I’ve heard of the Hindu Kush but this is more “Hindu Crush”…
